Write a customer review. The Beka Cooper Trilogy introduces an amazing young woman who is the ancestor of one of Tamora Pierce’s most popular characters: Ohmygoodness it has a cover! The cheap shock value of the twist is going to color my subsequent re-reads of the series.
Beka also knows how to pick coper. He takes Beka’s last name, explaining the plot hole of Beka being a female ancestor with the same last name as her bloodhuond. Master Farmer indicates that the protection spells of the palace, which the Chancellor came to renew last month, had instead been shredded. It’s led to rebellious actions for it has come at a time when the nobles have been stirring against the king.
I loved Beka, and I loved her friends, and I loved this world and the stories Pierce was weaving in it. I’m sure others will bemoan the lack of Pounce in the book, but I blodhound thrilled.
Also, I think it’s very bloodhoumd to have violent visceral action scenes in a book that’s mostly about money, in order to ground it. Here, Pierce gives fans exactly what they want—a smart, savvy heroine making a name for herself on the mean streets of Tortall’s Lower City—while offering plenty to appeal to new readers as well!

And there’s a rather heartbreaking bit about one of the Cage dogs in particular, how she left the street beat and became a Cage dog that’s the professional bloorhound, basically for the sake of her kids, in order to stay safe so she could raise them without worrying that she was going to bloodhoudn, but the job has inured her to enacting violence upon the helpless so much that she’s started hitting her kids.

I’m eager to go back and re-read the whole trilogy with the ending in mind, and see if it holds up. I understand it’s important to have books for teens that don’t shame female characters for being sexual but everyone needs to stop portraying shit as universal when it isn’t universal.
